National Highways has confirmed that updated traffic modelling shows that freight can return to the bridge safely without this restriction. As a result, the bridge is now expected to reopen to vehicles over 7.5 tonnes 24 hours a day, operating in a free‑flow arrangement for the vast majority of the time. While this change is intended to support traffic movement for communities in the Chepstow area and beyond, we recognise that residents in Pilning & Severn Beach will be watching closely to understand how this affects local roads and HGV patterns.

National Highways has been working to an accelerated 18‑month programme to restore full freight access. To ensure the system is fully tested, audited, and safe before reopening, the revised plan is to introduce the new operating arrangements in January 2027.

The Parish Council will continue to monitor the implications for our villages and will press for clear information on how HGV movements will be managed once the bridge reopens.
