Exploring Opportunities for Local Asset Management
The Parish Council has begun discussions with South Gloucestershire Council about the future management and potential transfer of a number of local community assets. These discussions form part of a wider programme being undertaken across the South Glos Council area.
The Parish Council has not made any decisions at this stage. However, we believe it is important to explore the opportunities available and to understand what they could mean for our community.
The assets being discussed include:
- Promenade Gardens and seafront areas
- Allotment land
- Public toilets
- Various grassed and open spaces within the parish
During a recent meeting, the Parish Council’s Chair and Clerk met with South Gloucestershire Council to discuss how any future arrangements might work. A key message from the Parish Council was that any transfer must be sustainable, properly assessed and provide flexibility for future generations to respond to changing community needs.
The discussions were constructive and covered a range of possibilities, including:
- Protecting and improving important community facilities.
- Maintaining public toilets and ensuring they remain viable in the long term.
- Supporting community events and activities on the seafront.
- Exploring opportunities to generate modest income that could help offset maintenance costs.
- Giving the Parish Council greater ability to shape local services and spaces.
The Chair also stressed the importance of understanding the condition of assets before any decisions are taken and ensuring that future agreements do not restrict sensible improvements or innovation.
South Gloucestershire Council confirmed that they are open to flexible arrangements and that discussions can take place on a phased basis rather than requiring an “all or nothing” approach.
What Happens Next?
The Parish Council will continue gathering information and carrying out due diligence before considering any formal proposals. There will be further discussions with South Gloucestershire Council over the coming months, and councillors will assess the potential benefits, costs and risks before making any decisions.
We will continue to keep residents informed as these discussions progress.
